Point Lance, Newfoundland-Labrador
I t was Friday, September 19 and we wanted to start the weekend off with traveling and research. So with family and work packed up we decided to go for a drive to research another community. While in Branch checking things out I found on the map a place neither of us had even noticed on our many drives before on the Cape Shore Drive. It wasn't far away so like many of times we gassed up the van, headed onward and made our way to Point Lance with no expectations of what was in store for us.
Well after a little drive with lots of open land and no moose to be seen we made it to the community of Point Lance. What a sight, the beach was so sandy and the waves looked awesome for boogy boarding. I was in love and couldn't wait to run up and down the beach touching the sand and enjoying what nature provides. I have lived my whole life in Newfoundland and never realized how many amazing beaches that we have. So with Kyle playing and furbabies having a lunch I hopped onto my phone to check online and see what I could find out about this community on our unplanned trip. Well no cell phone service so research is to be left until we get home.
What a way to start the weekend. The waves were so hypnotizing and relaxing, watching the waves, breathing the fresh air, watching Kyle and the furbabies play. All my troubles just seemed to melt away and I realized how blessed I am to live in Newfoundland and do what we do. Suddenly A neighbourhood dog came down to the beach to check us out and see what we were doing on his turf and spooked me because i had the furbabies. Took me a bit to relax but all was good.
So once I got home the research began and the planning of future trips was in the making. It's just too bad it is so late in the year before we stumbled upon this great place. A friend of mine told me about a hike he did. He had done a hike that is from Point Lance to Cape St Mary's; it is a 15 km walk. It isn't a marked trail but if you stay close to the coast you will figure it out. I was told a few sections are forested that you have to make your way the best you can. Also the fog in this area can be thick at times and weather should be checked before attempting the hike. Along the hike there is a waterfall and a lot of wildlife. . The waterfall runs off a cliff that falls about 400 feet down to the sandy beach below. A future overnight camping trip in this area is definitely a must.
Point Lance is located on the Avalon Peninsula between Placentia Bay and Saint Mary's Bay. In the early 1800's the community was initially settled as a farming community, even though they lived on one of the richest fishing grounds found in Newfoundland. The community was originally known as Bull Bay because of the three large rocks that lie just off the shore, The Bull, Cow and Calf. I wonder if the naming of these rocks was inspired by breaching humpback whales? To us, that is what they looked like. Point Lance became known and named because the land resembles a lance. It is definitely a community we look forward to going back and visiting.
